Royal Room - Monza

The Royal Room at the Monza railway station is the only remnant of the old railway complex built in 1840 as the terminal station of the first line of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, second only to the Napoli-Portici line. The renovation of the passenger building at the end of the 19th century preserved only this small room, which was personally requested by Umberto I of Savoy. In fact, the royal family frequently visited the town of Monza, where the Royal Palace of Monza, the royal summer residence, still stands today.

In the room, Neoclassicism takes center stage, and time seems to stand still, thanks to the period furnishings and the allegory of the Genio dei Savoia (Genius of the Savoy) that adorns the ceiling. The strong connection between the room and King Umberto I is also testified by events following his assassination: after the attack on July 29, 1900, in which the king was fatally wounded, his coffin was placed in this room before being transferred to Rome for the funeral, aboard a special train convoy.
