The Railway of Wonders is one of Europe’s most spectacular railway routes: a historic international line linking the Alps and the Mediterranean through landscapes of extraordinary beauty, including deep gorges, daring viaducts, spiral tunnels, and wild valleys. The journey begins in Turin, crosses the Piedmont plain, and reaches its most scenic section between Cuneo and Tende, where the tracks climb through the mountains using remarkable engineering solutions. After crossing the alpine pass, the train descends through the Roya Valley to Ventimiglia, passing picturesque villages nestled among the rocks before opening onto the Mediterranean Sea. In just a few hours, travelers experience a unique contrast between the alpine environment and the Ligurian coastline.
This is a journey that perfectly embodies the concept of slow tourism: an authentic experience free from rushed schedules, designed for those who wish to immerse themselves in nature, history, and borderland territories, exploring them at their own pace through hiking trails, local markets, and panoramic viewpoints.
On board, the experience becomes an integral part of the journey itself: time slows down, making room for observation and reflection, while the landscape flows into the carriages and accompanies each stage of the route like a continuous story. The train becomes an immersive space where every curve reveals new scenery and every window offers a privileged view of the Maritime Alps and the Mediterranean coast.
This itinerary is part of Itinerari d’Autore, the Fondazione FS Italiane project dedicated to enhancing some of Italy’s most iconic railway lines and transforming travel into an authentic and immersive experience. The journey is enriched by on-board food and wine tastings, offering passengers the opportunity to discover the finest products and traditions of the regions crossed along the route.
