Why Acqui Terme?
The Acqui Terme railway station, a junction on the Alessandria–San Giuseppe di Cairo–Savona and Asti–Ovada–Genoa lines, entered Italian railway history because on 25 May 1976 it was the terminus of the last train operated with three‑phase electric traction, arriving from Alessandria hauled by locomotives E 432 008 and E 431 003.
At 9:48 a.m., the three‑phase current was switched off forever. After the first interventions on the overhead line, at midday locomotive E 656 026 departed from Acqui with the train that marked the unification of the 3,000 V DC power supply system across the FS network. A piece of history was inexorably left behind as Italy entered the modern era.
